“Flat-Pack” The delivery solution to bulky Picture Frames.

With the correct equipment, it is not difficult for good craftsmen to manufacture high quality picture frames, even those with delicate profiles. Transporting them and delivering them safely to their customers is another matter which requires careful handling, labelling and often excessive packaging. Even then, frames can still arrive damaged and have to be replaced. We have all experienced the annoyance and inconvenience this can cause.

Jackson’s Framing Ltd. now offers an ideal solution. Established in 2006, and now based in East London, Jackson’s Framing Ltd has grown to be a successful and busy framing practice.  They started out making a line of products as a ‘chop service’.  This service offered customers the choice from hundreds of mouldings and profiles which would then be cut and mitred to the exact size they required.  This allowed practising artists – many very good amateur framers themselves – to complete unique frames in their studios without having to invest in expensive jointing machinery.

The key to this line of products is and was the Hoffmann Dovetail Key.  These Hoffmann Keys allow the customers to stain or polish the profile lengths themselves and then assemble the frames using the dovetail joiners provided. With a final polish these frames are made to measure, look made to measure, and are economical too. Many additional mouldings and profiles, especially deep profiles and hard-woods, can now be offered which couldn’t previously be jointed using traditional under-pinner machinery.

Director Claire Nock says “Initially we sold units of open ‘inlay’ framing, an open glassless frame style commonly used for artists’ canvases and panels but we have expanded the range to include deep rebated, box, turned and lacquered mouldings in the same self assembly format.  It has grown to be a very popular product and we could not have offered so much without the Hoffmann machinery and Hoffmann Dovetail Keys.”

“The range of applications of the Hoffmann Key for our products is extensive, from fine delicate profiles to extra deep rebated boxes and cases. The Hoffmann key system has meant that we can tackle complex jobs that our small under pinner could not cope with and so we have expanded our range as a result. Using the four standard cross section sizes of Hoffmann-Keys, and in various lengths, we have successfully made giant box cases for public spaces which are a tribute to the skill of our workers and the strength and versatility of the Hoffmann Key.”

They have now expanded the business and were happy to move to a new premises 18 months ago which was large enough to accommodate the “chop service” and run a full bespoke service for customers who can make the trip to see the facility. They have become expert in the production of large scaled frames and deep box framing as well as the classic inlay framing which still sells well.
